Creating a Butterfly Wedding Theme

Published under Wedding Themes

A butterfly wedding theme is both romantic and whimsical. It is a very popular theme that allows a bride to get very creative and have a lot of fun with.

Invitations
The butterfly wedding theme begins with the invitations. There are tons of places available to order butterfly themed invitations or the bride can choose to make her own from a variety of clipart sites online or with supplies found at a local craft store.

Attire
A brides' gown can be decorated to match the butterfly wedding theme by sewing appliqué butterflies onto the dress. She can also purchase a butterfly tiara or sew matching butterflies onto the fabric of her headpiece. The bridesmaid's dresses can also have appliqué butterflies sew onto them on a sleeve, or near the neckline. Many times, the butterflies can be died to match the bridesmaids dress. Some brides choose to create a butterfly throwing garter that can be made from lace and sewing elastic.

Decor
Various sizes of appliqué butterflies can be attached to pillars, scattered on tables, on the walls, backs of chairs, amongst flowers and garlands, on serving knives, candles, and doorways. There are an unlimited number of uses for these butterflies and they can add that extra special touch to any style butterfly theme wedding.

Location
There are many places that can be decorated to carry on the butterfly wedding theme. However, for a truly unique idea, a bride can look into booking time at a zoo or botanical garden. For a small private ceremony, places such as zoos and butterfly sanctuaries may offer butterfly enclosures that would be perfect.

Flowers
When choosing flowers, Phlox, Asters, Lilacs, Honeysuckle and wildflowers are usually used because these are what butterflies would be naturally attracted to. If a bride chooses to base their butterfly wedding theme around a particular butterfly, choose flowers and colors that match that particular type of butterfly. Use these flowers in bouquets, centerpieces, and scattered throughout the ceremony and reception. Another idea is to create buckets, baskets, or centerpieces of flowers and add a butterfly stalk (a wooden stick with a plastic, glass, or ceramic butterfly attached to the end) to them.

Butterfly Releases
The releasing of butterflies is a controversial subject. Many vendors will not sell butterflies for this purpose because butterflies are migratory insects and are often special ordered. When the butterflies are released, they can often become confused as to where they are or where they should go. As a result, many butterflies die in the winter.
