You probably think that you know everything there is to know about the groom’s wedding planning duties and responsibilities.
• Rent a tux– check
• Book the honeymoon – check
• Do a keg stand during your bachelor party – check
• Know the birthday of Harry S. Truman……wait a minute, that wasn’t on the list
Confused? Let me paint a picture for you...
It was Thursday May 8th of 2008 and I was two days away from my wedding. One of our last obstacles to tackle was heading down to the courthouse in downtown Kansas City, MO to pick up our marriage license. Little did we know that the 33rd President of the United States was about to drop the bomb on us.
It turns out that in the state of Missouri, Harry Truman’s birthday is a state holiday. All federal and state buildings close to honor the only US President born in Missouri. It would be impossible to get a marriage license that day anywhere in the state.
Now fortunately for us, we had another day to get the license. If it had been a Friday, however, it would have been a different story. The moral of the story here, grooms, is to be prepared for the unexpected. Wedding planning never goes according to plan. You may think you’ve got it figured out, but more often than not – you’re in for a few surprises.
