Wedding Trend Alert: Comfort Food and Wine Pairings

If you’ve been following our articles about the Top Ten Wedding Trends for 2010 you know that wedding food is getting back to basics. That means fewer things are moussed, flambéd or “expressed.” Basic fare like Steak, Chicken and Pot Pies are back, but with elegant ingredients.

Instead of chicken pot pie, think lobster pot pie, instead of a slider from White Castle, think a Kobe beef slider.

All of this raises an important question: What wine goes best with a bowl of mac and cheese? Honestly, I’m always a little embarrassed when I order wine, if it’s cold outside, I order a Shiraz. If it’s warm out, I order a Chardonnay. I know I should be doing a better job of matching my wine to my food, but I don’t really know where to start.

Well, now I know. The Mirassou Winery website has an amazing tool that lets you pick your main ingredient and spice, and it will tell you what wines go well with those flavors. For example, I’m a vegetarian and I like pesto, so now I know that my Chardonnay is in fact the right choice, but instead of a Shiraz, I should maybe consider a Merlot. (Hmm, sounds like a great iphone app doesn’t it? Hint, hint!)

The site also has some amazing sounding recipes by chef David Katz created especially to be paired with Mirassou wines.
