The Do Not Play Song List: Keep it Short
What songs will be on your wedding reception Do Not Play list?

Here’s my embarrassing confession of the day. I like the Macarena. It’s not that it’s my favorite song, or I go around requesting it, but I think it’s catchy. Also, as line/group dances go, it’s pretty easy. But, I am not you. You probably hate the Macarena and want it on your “do not play” list for your wedding band or DJ.

What else is going on your do not play list? The Chicken Dance? The Electric Slide? Country music? At GigMasters we recently surveyed brides and grooms and wedding professionals and discovered the top ten songs on last year’s do not play list. Predictably, some of the songs on the top ten “do not play” were also on the top ten “must play” lists.

One of our readers, a professional DJ, brought up that often the songs on the Do Not Play list are the exact songs guests are most likely to request. Since part of the point of hiring a wedding band or DJ is to help your guests have a good time, it’s something to keep in mind when making your list. Keep it short, don’t try and cancel out every song you kind of sort of don’t like, stick to the top 5 or 6 that really make you crazy. If you do that, I promise not to come and request the Macarena!
