4 Ways to Add Handmade/DIY Pieces to Your Wedding

Posted by The Man Registry on July 18th, 2012

With the popularity of websites like Etsy rapidly increasing, incorporating handmade or DIY items into the big day has become a growing wedding trend over the last few years. Whether you decide to go all in with a one-of-a-kind handmade wedding theme or prefer to inject just a few pieces into your wedding to personalize the day, here are four ideas to get you started:

Wedding invitations, save-the-dates or ceremony programs. By purchasing handmade invitations, you’ll put a unique spin on the first piece of wedding décor guests will see before the big day. Going this route may also lend itself to more eco-friendly options. If you’re the creative or crafty type, you can even create your own invites and put them together yourself. Here is a great DIY example to spark your creativity.

Linens and décor. Ever feel like you want something that just doesn’t exist in stores? Seek out an Etsy seller who creates custom orders, for example, to design the table linens or wedding decorations of your dreams. Another option: Stamp designs onto linens yourself by dipping purchased or found items around your home into ink. Although the possibilities are virtually endless with décor, other handmade or DIY ideas could include chalkboard signs (for directions or seating assignments), bunting or banners (that read “Just Married,” “Mr. and Mrs.” or “I Do”), wreaths and flower arrangements, chair signage, lanterns, escort cards, and cake toppers, just to name a few.

Bridal make-up. Instead of having the bride’s and bridesmaids’ make-up professionally done, consider doing your make-up yourself on your wedding day. Make sure to practice before the big day and replace any tools or cosmetics that have seen better days beforehand to ensure the best results. Also consider investing in waterproof make-up to keep runs at bay when the temperature rises and/or tears begin to flow.

Groomsmen and bridesmaids gifts. Etsy is a great resource for handmade gifts for your wedding party. Consider giving your groomsmen something really personal and unique, such as handmade whiskey barrels engraved with their names or monograms. For bridesmaids, think about giving them personalized handmade jewelry (such as necklaces or earrings) or custom-made clutches that match your wedding colors.

Whichever route you decide to go, you’ll find plenty of handmade/DIY options to incorporate into your wedding day.
