If your original wedding planning involved a small, intimate ceremony with only your closest family and friends, wouldn't you want your vow renewal to be a bit different?

On Saturday, a total of 1,087 couples gathered at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio to publicly renew their wedding vows as part of an effort to break the world's record - and they succeeded by a long shot.

The university said that more than 14 percent of its alumni are married to each other - a figure that is believed to be higher than at most other colleges.

Therefore, when it came time to celebrate its bicentennial, the university recruited graduates involved in what are known as "Miami mergers" - or alumni marital unions.

After that, they invited "Miami acquisitions," which refers to alums who have ventured a bit further afield to find their spouse.

Finally, parents of students, faculty, staff and the general community were added to the list until they had more than enough pairs to break the Guinness World Record - previously set by 624 couples in Pittsburgh last year.
