Houston Zoo
by kbarnett

March 6, 2009
I had taken off work early that day to celebrate my birthday with Richard and our friends, Mike and Betsy. I didn't know where we were going. In the 16 years I'd lived in the Houston area, I had never been to the Houston Zoo. Richard had sweetly remembered my comment about that months ago. We arrived at the zoo to celebrate my "birthday" and the beautiful early Spring weather. We visited the birds, flamingos, cheetas, giraffes, and elephants in the first hour we were there. Richard then pointed out a beautiful, old oak tree that he wanted to take a picture with. I obliged. We handed our friends our camera to take a picture of us. I assumed they were about to. Richard hugged me, looked into my eyes, and told me how much he loved me. Time seemed to stand still as he dropped to his knee and told me that he'd be honored if I spent my life with him and then said "Will you marry me?" I think there must have been a moment when I couldn't speak. I graciously accepted.
