The Engagement

From Erin's Point of View:

So the entire week leading up to this last weekend I was hoping Matt would be proposing while we were in San Ramon. Towards the end of the week I was beginning to have doubts whether it would happen yet but decided that I was ok with whatever Matt decided to do (like I had a choice!). On the drive up to San Ramon on Thursday after my last final I found out that Matt had a guitar, even though he claimed he couldn't play.

On Friday we had the most amazing date. We went to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. While we were there we ate sandwiches we had brought, rented a row boat on the lake, and laid on the grass in the sun. It was an absolutely beautiful day, the weather was perfect. There were a couple times where I thought he was going to propose, but then he never did. While we were laying in the sun, he even made me believe that he hadn't even bought the ring yet. Needless to say I was pretty much convinced that it wasn't going to happen yet.

After SF we went to a coffee shop in Pleasanton and then went to the mall. It seemed like just a normal afternoon, Matt didn't seem to be nervous or anything, it was just a normal day, doing the same things we always do.

For dinner we went to PF Changs which Matt later pointed out was where we had our first date (he has a better memory than I do). Once again, nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary, just a normal dinner. We were in no rush to get home because my parents had told me they were going to be out to dinner with an important client of my dad's.

On the way home from dinner Matt pulled into Memorial Park by my house (once again, nothing strange, we go to parks all the time). We walked around for a little while. He started to get a little flustered as we got back near the car, asking if there was more to the park. I told him about the field and he acted like he really wanted to see it, so we walked up to it. As we got closer I noticed a blanket laid out with rose petals all over and around it and a guitar case next to it. It was then that I knew what was going on, it was like I was in a movie.

Matt pulled out an A-Z picture book he had made of pictures of things we have done. Once we finished looking at the book he got out his guitar and played Sea Breeze by Tyrone Wells as he sang, both of which he had never done for me before. I could tell he was nervous but I was SO unbelievably impressed and in shock and awe. After the song he told me to close my eyes. He then pulled out a fortune cookie. Instead of the normal fortune it said "Will you marry me?" (this is funny because I had been joking at dinner about how he should propose with a fortune cookie...I have no idea how he kept a straight face, knowing what he was about to do!). As I was reading the message and trying to process what was going on he pulled out the ring. BEAUTIFUL! Of course I said yes!

After we took some pictures we headed back to my house where there were people to celebrate. What a perfect day!

From Matt's Point of View:

It all came together pretty quickly. I bought the ring a couple weeks before I proposed, and it all started coming together from there. Erin had a break from school and I was going up to her parents' house with her, so I decided to do it then.

We had a whole day planned for Friday, April 3rd. It started off with a trip to Golden Gate Park. We went to Stow Lake and rented a row boat after we ate lunch by the lake. I knew Erin would be expecting me to do it then, so I had to hold off until later because I wanted it to be a surprise. After the lake, we went down to a big grassy field and just relaxed on a blanket for a while, soaking up the sun.

From Golden Gate Park, we went to dinner at PF Chang's, the Chinese restaurant where Erin and I went on our first date. My heart was pounding the entire meal as I realized it was getting closer and closer. On the way home from dinner, I pulled into a park by Erin's house. We walked around for a little bit until we came to a blanket covered with rose petals and my guitar sitting next to it. We sat down and I pulled out a picture book that I had made for her of all the different things we had done over the past couple of years. After we looked at that, I played her one of our favorite songs, Sea Breeze by Tyrone Wells.

After I finished the song, I pulled a custom made fortune cookie out of my guitar case. Instead of a normal fortune, I had written "Will you marry me?" on a little slip of paper. As she was reading it I got up onto one knee and pulled out the ring.

She said yes!
