Review: Alea Saved the Day

  • Alea had luckily planned for everything. That was good because we had a freak snowstorm happen during our little wedding. This was in June. Of course, snow is always possible in Yellowstone. Even though we were hoping to get tons of pictures with the beautiful scenery, this was cut short due to the extremely strong winds. Alea had a backup plan, though, and led us to some indoor locations she had staked before our wedding. It was in one of these locations that Alea took a picture of my wife and me sitting at a piano. It's a really cool, stylized black and white photo that looks like it could have been taken 50 years ago, and we love it!
  • My wedding was very, very small. It was just me, my wife, and her parents in a little chapel at Yellowstone. Alea got to the locations ahead of us to scope out the scene. She recognized the intimacy of our wedding and basically just went with the flow.
  • I was very happy with my service from Alea Deon Photography. Alea got my wife and me out of a bind. We were getting married in another state, and our booked photographer cancelled on us two weeks before our wedding date. Alea saved the day and got a hold of us, booked the date, and planned with us all within our short time frame. My experience couldn't be more different than the negative reviewer before me. I found Alea's communication to be excellent. We spoke several times and communicated via email as well. Alea was very specific in asking what I was looking for and what I liked. She was very flexible, and I felt she over-delivered. We got our photos quickly and at a very reasonable price. I even remember talking to my wife about how I didn't' think Alea charged enough. I am a professional photographer myself, and part of the reason I sought out Alea was because I liked her style. I in no way felt deceived by what Alea's samples portrayed vs what I received. I can't speak for anyone else's experience, but I will tell you for certain I was very pleased. I invite anyone to contact me personally if you have any questions. You can email me at derekglewis(at)hotmail.com. I'll even call you if you want to email me your phone number. That's how highly I recommend this photographer. For some background: I got married in June of 2011. I didn't know Alea before contacting her to photograph my wedding. I found her by painstakingly searching for photographers online and then chose her from my favorites. I haven't been in contact with her since we ended our business with her, but I felt compelled to share my experience. Thanks!
  • I felt that Alea was very good at listening to us. She gave us everything we asked for and more. She was very attentive and easy to talk to. I never had a problem getting a hold of her when I had a question.

  • What was included in your wedding photo package? Albums? DVDs? Engagement pics? Two photographers? Overall disappointed from the service received. Enormous lack of communication throughout the process, which ended with her ignoring our previous requests about who we really wanted photos of and the editing style we would prefer. The groom's side of the family is mostly absent from all photos. We had to keep asking her to take photos, and she acted like we were inconveniencing her. Very disappointing. A large majority of the photos turned out blurry, and she tried to compensate by adding unprofessional filter effects such as glowing or poster edges. Also, she used way too high of contrast and saturation in her editing, resulting in photos with large black blobs instead of recognizable suits and pants. The slide show is a joke. It's super-compressed so you can literally see the pixels in the photos (lower than cell-phone quality), and the quality of the music is awful as well. Had to practically beg to receive more than a CD 1/3 of the way full of jpegs (that's what we received first). We paid for seven hours, and she left out all getting ready photos and decoration photos and dancing photos off our original disc. Also, she asked to go home an hour early, and I let her because she said she had taken 3x the amount of photos she took at the last two weddings. I regret my generosity now. We received everything several weeks later than stated in the contract. Also, she is now double the price of what we paid after only being in business a year, and she is not worth either price in my opinion. Having a professional quality camera does not make you a photographer. I don't want others to regret paying this amount of money and wishing for a do-over as I do.

Vendor Comment:

Hello Emily. I have never before received a negative response and I have LITERALLY taken thousands of wedding pictures. Honestly, gushing gratitude for fine work is the typical response I receive! Let us review the facts of your wedding day so that we can understand this isolated incident of a negative review (this has been my only one ever!). My overall reaction to your wedding was that it was a happy occasion. I say this despite the fact that it was held outside in an open park with ravishing winds, tumultuous rain and occasional lightning. My assistant had to chase me around with an umbrella in the torrent. But you were a gorgeous bride and your new husband was quite handsome. The wedding party was unusually large (with several children) in the wedding party and getting them to pose for me was quite challenging. I have often photographed much larger parties without any issues. I love being a photographer and have always been able to assume positive reactions to my creative approach. As a very serious photographer, I work extremely hard to ensure that all my obligations as a wedding photographer are met. My dossier of VERY satisfied brides is impressive and unending. I meticulously plan and mull over where and when my wedding photos are to be taken so that each wedding is special and has a very unique flavor. Your wedding was no different, although my intentions may have been somewhat stymied by the torrid weather that day. I usually prepare a video of pictures to music as an artistic bonus to the wedding photograph package and add the music that is especially chosen by you for that wedding. I have only received positive feedback on these artistic videos (and have even received gratuitous tips worth hundreds of dollars because my clients were so pleased!). Understand that I am very zealous about my creative effort and listen carefully when it comes to my clients’ reactions and input to my work. Photography is my passion. My fervent goal is to delight all my clients. I can assure you that I have learned from my experience with your particular wedding and its distinct challenges. You and I obviously have creative differences. Odds are that this might happen to me once. However, I stand by my work at your wedding and have posted several of your pics on my website, designating them in a special slideshow so that anyone who questions my creative integrity can easily review them. They are beautiful. My credibility remains solid. When I shoot a wedding I aim to capture the essence of the marital union forever so that those pictures can memorialize the event. I do not take this weighty responsibility lightly and am naturally disappointed that you were dissatisfied in any way. Finally, the vapidness in your criticism, I must admit, came as a shock. Some people just do not understand the rashness of insulting a business’ reputation by baseless on-line attacks under an ‘Anonymous’ moniker (or maybe they do). You should know that creating a magnificent wedding photograph portfolio for each client is critically important to me. The truth is that I can't control whether one client (out of all of my many clients) will have creative differences. Still, I humbly thank you for your feedback and I promise to learn from your criticism. With sincerity and kindness, Alea Deon.

  • What was your favorite wedding photo? My favorite photo is a simple picture that she took while we weren't even paying attention. We are just talking to each other and looking up at each other, but she snapped a photo and it was amazing... the love she captured was captivating.
  • How did the wedding photographer avoid disrupting the day? Great with candids? Action shots? Portraits? She wore a nice suit, was quiet but amusing! She has a light and fun personality but is professional and serious about her work.
  • What was included in your wedding photo package? Albums? DVDs? Engagement pics? Two photographers? A disc full of edited, high-definition photos... It depends on the package but I got a beautiful 8x10 framed print and I opted for the photo album, which was beautiful. Her prices are very affordable, sometimes I worry I paid to little for the quality of work but I love her honesty.
  • How did the photographer make you and family comfortable? She was constantly smiling and telling us jokes. She has a cute sarcastic smile. I would definitely recommend her to everyone!
