In this week’s column, Wedding Maven Marta Segal Block offers some cold, hard truth about who holds the purse strings. Dear Wedding Maven, I recently got engaged. My parents have offered to pay for my wedding, which I’m very grateful for. However, I’m a little concerned about what this means. We have very different tastes. (I know my mom wants a traditional church wedding, my dad... (more)

If your idea of a Jewish wedding is a man singing “Tradition” and dancing with a bottle on his head, you may have watched “Fiddler on the Roof” a few too many times. In many ways, modern Jewish weddings are not all that different from any other ceremony. If you’re the one planning a Jewish wedding, Mazel Tov. It happens to a lot of brides: You get engaged, and your friends say you’re pulling away. Or maybe they even accused you of dropping your friends when you started getting serious with your fiancé. Whoa, since you’ve started dating him? Adding a serious relationship to a friendship mix can definitely make things touchy for a bit, especially if your relationship gets serious quickly.... (more)

When my friends “Clifford” and “Odile” got married, they were both in grad school and thus both pretty money-conscious. They wanted small and they wanted simple. Odile’s mom? Not so much the small and simple type. She offered to kick in money to pay for a chocolate fountain at the reception. The fountain seemed like a ridiculous waste of money to Clifford and Odile. They said... (more)

As you may have noticed, the 2008 elections caused flurries in the news for races that were a little further down the ballot than usual: Arizona, California, and Florida all passed ballot measures banning same-sex marriage. (Arkansas also passed a measure that banned any single person from adopting a child, a law that many also saw as aimed at the gay and lesbian community.) California’s... (more)

It’s amazing how many of my friends started lamenting freedom of choice once they got engaged. Almost everyone felt like she got judged by half the people she knew if she kept her own name, and judged by the other half if she didn’t. And if she hyphenated, people made totally uncalled-for squinchy faces. It sucks, and it’s a dilemma you face that your groom (probably) doesn’t. On... (more)

OK, so we’ve all had that friend in elementary school or junior high school where you like each other so much that you start to look alike, right? You do your hair the same and you wear the same kinds of clothes and half the stuff you do the same you don’t even know whose idea it was. But then you hit high school, and that gets less fun. Only not everyone realizes it. Have you met these... (more)

I’m not especially religious. I wouldn’t say I’m an atheist. Or even an agnostic, really. I guess I’m one of the kazillion people who vaguely describe themselves as “not religious, but spiritual,” even though I suspect a lot of people get annoyed when I do. I guess I haven’t done a ton of soul-searching yet and so far haven’t felt the need to. (Under duress from a woman who... (more)

About every third time I reach for a mug, I grab the one from Heather and David’s wedding. And, yes, I do often take a moment to think about how much fun I had at the wedding and what a good couple they are. So their crafty plan worked. Plus they gave out excellent wedding favors – the mugs were useful, easily personalized, appropriate for two such notorious caffeine addicts, and came... (more)
