A Few Things to Remember About Dressing Your Bridesmaids in 2013

2013 is lookin' good on the bridesmaid front. Once upon a time bridesmaids dresses were the Mohave Desert of bridal fashion. That was until cutting edge companies like Ivy & Aster, BHLDN and up and coming designers like Leanne Marshall finally filled a gap in an industry screaming for change. Here are a few of my own observations about that change and dressing your bridemaids.

These are some of your closest friends--the ladies you've laughed and cried with over the years. So let them help choose their dresses! And remember, after the ball is over your MOH and bridesmaids most likely want a dress they can wear again and jazz up with different belts, scarves and accessories.

Most of the requests I'm getting this season (yes, it's already started) are for bridesmaid dresses in graduated colors. This can mean several shades in a monochromatic like blue or pink, or each maid running the gamut of just about every color found in the rainbow.

In case you haven't heard, bridesmaids step-halting down the aisle in matchy-matchy dresses are pretty passe. If you do dress all your maids in one color, try not to do them up as  identical quintuplets unless they all share the same proportions give or take a few inches. Besides, not all your friends are going to sport a natural waist or Sabrina neckline to the best advantage. There's a way you can tie the look of your bridesmaids together while bringing out the best in each one. Some designers are creating dresses in the same shade with different necklines and waists to mix it up a little. Below is a perfect example.

Mix and Match Bridesmaids in Coral

Two Birds - One dress in the same color with several different neckline and waist options...

Keep everyone connected but give clear guidelines about color and the type of silhouette you want. After that chill out and realize you can probably trust your friend's judgment. Those shoes she likes so much that make her unique probably will look great in satin.

We've come a long way baby! Ever wondered what happened to all those not quite ready for prime time bridesmaid frocks from a few years back once the wedding was over? I was in my neighborhood charity shop a couple years ago when I zoned in on the quintessential: shiny triple tiered shocking pink that looked as if all the air had been let out of the ruffles.

This, like countless other once-worn pastels still hang in many a thrift shop or stuffed away in the back of a closet. More resourceful bridesmaids have been known to make pillows and patchwork throws out of them. Fortunately those days belong to the ages of fashion history.
