Destination Weddings - Choosing a Photographer

Your destination wedding might be in the southern reaches of Latin America, an exhilarating metropolitan setting like Paris, or as near as the backyard where you grew up. Finding an experienced destination photographer who suits your unique needs can be the key to capturing it all. Each couple chooses their destination for reasons that are special to them. A knowledgeable destination photographer will get to know you and your groom personally so he or she can show the full meaning and beauty of your wedding. Understand your package When choosing your photographer, it’s a good idea to ask questions about pricing early on, and to make sure you understand what is included. Some photographers will charge a simple flat fee for the entire package, while some may price out food, airfare, hotel, and sundries separately as reimbursable costs. Any destination photographer you choose should be willing to include extra photographic coverage as part of his or her basic destination package to make sure you capture the flavor of your chosen destination as well as the complete story of your wedding. Look for multicultural expertise. You and your groom may speak a different language or dialect than that of the country where you’ll be getting married. It is helpful to work with a photographer who speaks the same language as you and is fluent in at least one other language, as he or she will be knowledgeable about the nuances of working in different language environments and perhaps even speak the language of your chosen destination. Consider a photographer close to home. Working with a destination wedding photographer from your own country can make communication and the coordination of pre- and post-wedding logistics much easier. A photographer from your own culture may also have a better immediate understanding of the quality and style of photography you’d prefer. In the wedding planning process, a destination wedding photographer who is based in your own country offers you the advantages of a closer time zone than your chosen destination, and prompt responses (many countries operate on a different “cultural time schedule,” as brides planning a destination wedding in the Caribbean can attest). Having a destination wedding photographer who is based in your own country will continue to be an advantage after your wedding. He or she will be able to work closely with you in providing access to your online gallery of images, delivering final print orders promptly and satisfactorily, and designing and delivering your wedding album and disk of images. Last and perhaps most important, by working with a professional destination wedding photographer in your own country, you will be able to meet in person and get to know his or her personality. Just as in hiring a wedding photographer for a local wedding, it’s important to establish that the quality, style, and personality of your destination wedding photographer is a match – he or she will be spending quite a bit of time with you on your wedding day. You should get along well, and he or she should understand your wedding day vision. International wedding photographer Laura Luis is local to the Washington, DC metro region with bases in New York City and San Francisco. She offers professional wedding photographer services for local, regional, and destination weddings. Find out more about Three Lights Photo
