Got March Madness on the brain? Who doesn’t this time of year? If you and your fiancé are die-hard college basketball fans (like my husband and me), you’re probably looking for ways incorporate your love of sports in your wedding day. Whether you want to go subtle or go big, thankfully, you have plenty of options to choose from. Here are a few ideas to consider:
Sports groom’s cake. Talk to your cake baker about creating the perfect basketball-themed groom’s cake. Whether it sports your team’s logo, mascot or school colors, your wedding guests will have no questions about where your loyalty lies. Up the ante by placing a few pieces of cool team memorabilia nearby on the cake table to complement it.
Décor. Show everyone your team pride by using your alma mater’s colors as your wedding colors or incorporating your school’s colors or logo on items such as cocktail napkins, centerpieces, and more. One idea: Have engagement photos taken on your school’s home court, standing near a famous statue or school mascot on campus, or even at your local sports bar wearing your team best, and use the framed photos as table number displays.
Attire. So, maybe wearing team jerseys to your wedding would be a bit much. But why not give a nod to your fave team in more subtle ways? For example, the groom could wear team mascot cuff links with his tux, and the bride could wear a garter featuring the team logo—it might even be the perfect spot to incorporate something blue, if blue happens to be one of your team’s colors. Another idea: Place temporary team mascot tattoos or stickers on the bottoms of your shoes, so they’ll peek out when you sit down or pose for wedding photos later.
Incorporate your school song, fight song or chant. While this most likely won’t be appropriate for your first dance as newlyweds, why not have your wedding party (assuming they went to the same school or are fans of the same team) or other alumni in attendance join you on the dance floor to sing your school song, clap along to the fight song or participate in other special school/team traditions, such as the famous Kansas Jayhawks Rock Chalk Chant.
Wedding party gifts. Show your groomsmen and/or bridesmaids your appreciation for their love, support and participation in your wedding day by giving them collegiate team-themed gifts, such as a custom locker room print, logo'd blanket, team folding chair, a set of pint glasses featuring your school mascot, team grilling tools, game day T-shirt, etc.
Registry. Lastly, don’t forget to register for team gear to add to your growing collection. Who doesn’t need a giant painting of your team’s home court to go above your couch, a steak branding iron sporting your team’s mascot for cook-outs or a team pub table and chair set for entertaining?
Whether you end up going with one or more of these suggestions, or decide to come up with one of your own, don’t be afraid to make your love of the game at least a small part of your big day.
