Interview with Fabulous Wedding Planner Rena Puebla

A few weeks ago we gave away a Renellie Cake Topper. These cake toppers are a favorite with couples of mixed ethnicities because you can mix and match the bride and groom to create a couple that looks like you. Before we did the giveaway I had the chance to talk with the creator, wedding and event planner Rena Puebla. Rena is going to be featured on this week’s episode of TLC’s Battle of the Wedding Planners (Friday at 10). The show follows wedding planners as they compete to provide one lucky couple with the wedding of their dreams. Rena has been an event planner for over 20 years and I asked her about the cake toppers, how weddings have changed, and her recent brush with stardom. Q: Why did you create the cake toppers? A: I’m African-American and my husband is Japanese-American, when we were getting married we couldn’t find cake toppers that looked like either of us, let alone both of us! I thought about it all through our honeymoon and when we came home I started working on the idea. Q: What was it like being on a Reality TV show? A: It was an incredible experience. We filmed for three days straight, always in the same outfits so that it looked like one day’s work! Everyone was so professional and kind. Q: What changes have you seen in weddings in the last few years? A: In the last 15 years there’s been a trend toward more elaborate weddings, weddings with themes. More money is being spent, and weddings are becoming less traditional. Brides and grooms want to make the wedding about themselves, and what’s important to them. Q: Have you ever turned down a client? A: Yes! If I feel like I’m not a good fit, than I turn down the business. I was recently approached by a bride who wanted to wear a thong bikini with a long veil as her “wedding dress.” She had very traditional in-laws and I knew no good could come of it, so I turned down the wedding. Q: What advice do you have for people who want to get into the wedding planning business? A: People see a one hour TV show and don’t realize everything that goes in to being a planner. For example, did you know that if you want to have an outdoor wedding you need to make sure they don’t water the grounds for three days ahead of time? If you want to be a planner you need to remember that it isn’t about you, it’s about the clients and what they want. You should invest in classes, travel and get to know different cultures. We live in a global society now, you can’t assume that your clients will all have your same background. And of course, be gracious. Treat everyone as an equal and say thank you to everyone, that’s the best advice I have for anyone! Don't forget to turn into TLC's Battle of the Wedding Planners, Friday night at 10!
