Six Biggest Faux Pas Kids Make at Weddings

To invite, or not to invite, children to the wedding is a topic that has long caused strife to wedding planning couples.  Some say a wedding with drinking and dancing all through the night is no place for children.  Others think that leaving kids off the guest list is ridiculous and rude.  But ultimately, it is up to the couple to choose what’s right for them, and you can’t blame a bride for thinking that no kids means no wedding day disasters.  So today, we take a fun look at the six most major faux pas kids make at weddings!

THINKING IT'S ALL ABOUT THEM. According to The Broke-Ass Bride, you give a kid a flower basket or ring bearer pillow, and suddenly they get a big head about it. And all those adoring adults don't help matters. These kids might talk loudly during the ceremony, start reciting their ABCs, or break out MJ-style dance moves, totally upstaging your special moment.

SETTING THINGS ON FIRE. Literally. Kids are pyros. I know I was, and so were my sisters and cousins. When we saw fire, we wanted to play. And when the littlest wedding guests see votive flames dancing across the reception table, you better hope an adult is watching! Wedding planner Glenna Tooman of Memory Makers Event Planning witnessed napkins and programs being set ablaze by kids at one reception, a wedding day disaster waiting to happen!

DESECRATING THE CAKE. Your wedding cake will be a prime target for underage guests. Realize this now! After all, kids love sweets and often have limited access to them. So the moment they see that beautiful 3-tier fondant wedding cake, the wheels start turning. If given the opportunity, they’ll lick, stick and swipe their fingers through your cake, before your wedding photographer has the chance to capture the cake cutting moment.

TRASHING THE DRESS. Sure, she looks innocent now but just wait til the flower girl is two pieces of cake deep at the reception... At the ripe age of eight, I custom designed my dress for First Communion (a Catholic sacrament), just to have it destroyed by my younger cousin, moments after stepping onto the dance floor. This still brings a tear to my eye, so imagine how you would feel if your dream wedding dress fell victim to a child at your wedding. Wedding dresses have been ripped, puked on, spilled on, and peed on (yes, it has happened), and the last thing you want is a bridezilla moment after one unruly tike trashes your dress.

SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER. This one is obvious but we couldn’t let it go unsaid. There is nothing worse than a child wailing/shrieking/bawling during the ceremony as the parent sits there, smiling, like nothing is wrong. In fact, this probably tops the list of biggest faux pas parents make at weddings!

INTRUDING ON THE FIRST DANCE. The first dance is a special moment between bride and groom.  And unless the couple clearly plans to share the spotlight, they should NOT have to share this moment with a guest’s mini me.  I saw my friend’s first dance interrupted seconds after it started, as her overzealous cousin stormed the dance floor and broke the couple apart, Red Rover style.  She handled it with style and grace, but now that more and more couples are learning choreographed routines for their first dances, the first dance floor should be a kid free zone!

What faux pas have you seen kids make at weddings? And, are you opting for an 18 or 21 and older guest list to avoid potential disasters?
