Splurge or Save: Fancy Calligraphy Wedding Invitations

splurge vs save wedding invitations

  •
  • Last time on “Splurge or Save”, we ogled pricey designer pumps - but this week we’re discussing something that’s a little more fundamental to your wedding…the invites! They say the invitation sets the tone for the entire celebration - so while a free e-vite is fabulous for your budget, it might not be the best option if you want your event to be a formal, black-tie affair. That’s not to say it can’t be done! (Subject: BLACK TIE OR DIE)
  •
  • Invitations can take up a little or a lot of your wedding budget - if you are planning to send actual paper invites, you should allot at LEAST 100 to 200 dollars, and that amount basically just covers the cost of your materials. If you or your spouse-to-be have better-than-basic Photoshop skills, now’s a great time to put them to good use! Designing and printing your own invites at home will save you a bundle. If you’re not design-savvy - then your next best option is paying a talented Etsy seller to design your invite for you - just search “wedding invitation printable” and prepare to be wowed! I’m quite partial to this calligraphy design from HYSSOPDESIGN.

  • Of course, on the other end of the spectrum, there’s the holy grail of paper stationery - letterpress wedding invitations. If you’ve ever received one in the mail, you probably understand their special allure. Letterpress is the most artful, ornate, and ahem, expensive of all printing processes - and it looks it. A letterpress invitation set can cost as much as 10 to 20 dollars PER INVITE. Of course, there are ways to keep the costs lower – and these gorgeous invites from Bella Figura are comparatively affordable at just under 700 dollars for 100 invites.
  •
  • However, if you’re a bride on a serious budget, heed these words: file letterpress in a special mental wedding folder titled “NOT GONNA HAPPEN” - right next to couture gowns and Tiffany engagement rings. Look all you want, but DON’T touch. And don’t despair – there’s an exciting range of beautiful paper options for the intrepid DIY-er. Just remember: free samples are your friend!
  •
  • Brides, we want to know – did you splurge or save on wedding invites? Do you wish you’d spent more or less?
