To Hitch or to Ditch: Tossing the Bridal Bouquet

  • As you know, weddings are laced with traditions, some dating back to the 14th century.  One such tradition is the bridal bouquet toss.
  •
  • Did you know... Back in the day, brides' tossed their bouquets (and anything else tossable) to avoid getting bum rushed by their wedding guests.  Sound strange?  Well... it's much less sinister than it sounds, but still pretty wild!  Anything the bride wore, held or touched on her wedding day was believed to be lucky, with the wedding dress being the luckiest piece of all.  Guests would literally tear at the bride's gown (while she was still wearing it), hoping to score a little piece of good luck.
  •
  • Understandably, 14th century brides' didn't love getting mobbed at the wedding reception (can you imagine having your dream wedding dress mutilated in this manner?).  So they got creative and started grabbing anything within arm's reach and tossing it to the eager crowd.  And thus, the bouquet tossing tradition began!
  •
  • But, it's not the 14th century and wedding guests these days are much more polite.  So brides' need not fear for their safety or the safety of their perfect, pricey wedding dress.  We're seeing more and more brides foregoing the bridal bouquet toss, and for good reason.  We're curious to hear your take on this tradition!
  •
  • Why brides are ditching it:  Have you ever attended a wedding without a plus one because at the time, you were swinging single?  Most of us have, and it's never easy when most everyone else is coupled up.  Now think about those single wedding guests who happen to be mending broken hearts or dealing with recent breakups... I don't know about you, but when I've been in this position, there was no way in h.e. double hockey sticks I'd hit the dance floor to compete for the bouquet when the wedding DJ made his big announcement.  And THIS is why many brides are ditching the bouquet toss, as they feel it singles out the single ladies.
  •
  • Do you agree?  Will you be sticking with tradition and tossing the bouquet, or will you forgo this long-standing custom?  And if you're a wedding pro, what's your position?  To weigh in, post a comment below, tweet @OneWed or post to our Facebook wall!
