Top Five Fashion Faux Pas Grooms Make

After sharing these 9 wedding dress don'ts that every bride should avoid, I got to thinking... what about the grooms? Oh, and the hapless fashion choices some have made...

Brides and grooms are two very different animals, and men in general don't care much about fashion, style or trends. Most view shopping as a punishment, not a treat, so it can only be expected that grooms take a lax approach to their wedding day attire. But an un-dapper groom won’t do his drop dead gorgeous bride justice, so here are five major fashion faux pas to steer clear of:

Accessories from hell: Whether it's bright white socks with a classic black tux, a ridiculous handlebar mustache (thanks to a lost bet with the Best Man), or a matchy matchy nightmare (think pocket square, tie, cummerbund, cufflinks, bout...all in the hottest hot pink you've ever seen), many a groom has fallen victim to bad wedding accessories and bad facial hair. So let your stylish bride or fashion savvy friend lead the way, and don’t forget the shave and a haircut!

Trendy over timeless: This really applies to every single person attending a wedding, but it’s your big day, so we want you looking fabulous! And while we love a groom infusing his style and personality into the wedding day look, it’s important to do so in an understated way. Too trendy attire will put a timestamp on your wedding photos, and who wants that?

When soles speak: We’ve all seen the photo—bride and groom kneel at the altar, groom has “Help Me!” (or another cheeky phrase) written on the soles of his shoes. Typically this is a practical joke played on the groom, but regardless, it’s a major fashion faux pas that will likely p*ss off the bride. So watch the funny guy in your wedding party like a hawk, and keep your shoes on lockdown!

Oh those shades: When I see a guy out and about at night, wearing sunglasses, a few D words come to mind. Desperate is one, and I’ll stop there… But the worst is when they multiply, and it’s a group of guys wearing sunglasses when they shouldn’t. So if you feel the urge to stage a scene like this with your Best Man and groomsmen on the wedding day, fight it and fight it hard. And work with your wedding photographer to come up with a few more original ideas for capturing the guys.

Rental woes: If at all possible, ditch the rented tux or suit for your wedding day. Groom's attire is all about tailoring and fit, and the difference between a tux/suit tailored for you and one that is not is huge. So grooms—remember the wedding day is your day too, and your bride isn’t the only one who can splurge! Treat yourself to something classic and timeless that fits like a dream.
