Unusual Wedding Customs: Irish Traveler Weddings

By Azure Nelson, Published May 7, 2010

One of the most interesting things about writing about weddings is that you learn about so many different cultures. It can be so easy to dismiss other people's traditions and customs as tacky. But, if you try to view other weddings neutrally, not as what you would or wouldn't do, you can find beauty in almost any wedding. Irish Travelers are a unique, small ethnic group in Ireland. They're sort of like the Roma (gypsies) of Eastern Europe. They're generally poor and they move around a lot. Girls especially rarely go to school and marry very young. But they have huge extravagant weddings with 25-tier cakes and jewel encrusted dresses! Brides also have a mini-bride, a young girl she dresses to look exactly like her. The girl in the picture above is sixteen. If you'd like to see more pictures from her wedding you can visit the website of photojournalist Neelakshi Vidyalanka.
