Wedding Planning Advice: DIY and DIDon’t

It's true that going DIY with certain aspects of the wedding can save you a bundle. But it can also add stress and frustration (something brides certainly don't need leading up to the big day) if DIY projects are not handled and managed with care. So when pondering the question, to DIY or not to DIY, use the helpful Do's and Don'ts below as your guide...

DO have a solid plan before you start buying - The main reason couples choose to DIY is to save money. But when you start buying things you don't need, and materials you won't use, the money you could save goes out the window. So before you start swiping that plastic, make sure you have a plan in place and a shopping list in hand!

DON'T skimp on the essential materials for your DIY projects - Any crafter will tell you that certain tools (like a glue gun, wire cutters, a Cricut) are essential to DIY success. So when it comes to buying these items, pony up for whatever you need (even if the cost seems high), and remember that these tools will come in handy again and again.

DO consider all your options before deciding to go DIY - Just because you can't afford thousands of dollars worth of fresh flowers for your wedding, doesn't mean you must DIY your bouquet and arrangements, or can't hire a pro. Think outside the box and consider all your options, like fresh flower alternatives (paper, fabric, brooch, button) on Etsy, or affordable, in-season blooms from your local farmer's market or florist.

DON'T bite off more than you can chew - Know now that the weeks and months leading up to your wedding will be busy, hectic, and sometimes stressful. And the last thing you need during this time is a major DIY project hanging over your head. So when choosing your DIYs, live by the KISS principle and don't take on more than your pretty bridey self can handle!

DO utilize the talents of your besties and family members but...

DON'T use and abuse the help generously donated by loved ones - Almost every episode of Bridezillas has a part where the bridesmaids, family, and friends are slaving away on the bride's DIY projects, as the bride looks on, barks orders, hurls insults, and sips, sips, sips away on her Arbor Mist (or Natty Light). DON'T be this bride! Instead, treat your helpers like guests, and provide food, drinks, and a big thanks at the end.

DO run all potential DIY projects by your groom before you get started - I'm notorious for starting DIYs I don't finish... and making a big mess along the way! My fiance jokes about it often, but I know he wouldn't appreciate our home being turned into a 24 hour crafting studio without a little heads up. So as you should with every important aspect of your wedding, include your groom in all DIY decisions. You might be surprised to learn he's got a master crafter inside just waiting to come out!

What other DIY do's and don'ts would you add to this list? Sound off in the comments section below!
