Wedding Planning Wisdom—Stretching Your Décor Budget

Now that I'm wedding planning too, I thought it would be fun to tackle important questions on most brides minds. And if you have a question you want answered, just email it to us at with "Wedding Planning Wisdom" in the subject line. We'll tap our vast network of wedding pros and blogger friends to share their expertise. Ready for question numero uno? Let's do it!

The Question: I'm on a tight décor budget, so what can I do to make the most of my wedding reception space?

The Answer: When it comes to reception décor, always remember two things: First, Color is Free and second, color is almost always your friend!

No matter what your budget for floral, you can usually throw in color to accentuate your centerpieces, color scheme or unique event space. People go on and on about linens, which are awesome, but in truth sometimes if your linens are included at your venue, upgrades can get quite pricey. So today, let's turn our attention to the little things- really little- like votives!

Using colored votives is often exactly the same price as using clear plain ones, and an addition that you can often order in bulk online if you don't want to pay your florists' marked-up price.

The photo above shows a sleek modern table enhanced by fuschia votives. They really make the floral arrangements pop, and look amazing paired with the bright white accents. But the bride didn't just stop there, she used fuschia twine ribbon on her glassware and napkins to draw out the bright and bold hot pink accent color. The seemingly small details make the whole table feel a little bit more coordinated.

Even for more casual I Do's, colored votives can spice up the dreaded plain white linen, and play up the colors in your wedding reception floral arrangements. Colored napkins are another budget-friendly decor secret, adding about 10-15 cents per guest (a small price to pay considering the world of difference they make in transforming the room).

Are you adding any unexpected little dashes of color to your reception décor? If so, how will you do it? Sound off below!
