10 Secrets to Styling an Old Hollywood Wedding

When styling any wedding with a theme there is one golden rule—exercise restraint!

Style your overall décor with influences from your theme or era, rather than actually having a “themed wedding.” It is much more tasteful to plan your wedding décor with influences rather than making the focus of your day the “theme” and not you!

Old Hollywood, vintage glam weddings have been trending for quite some time, and while we love this theme, it’s one that can quickly take a turn for the worst if overdone. However, with inspiration and restraint, any couple can achieve an elegant and glamorous 1930’s, 40’s, or 50’s-inspired wedding.

Here is our guide to help you pull off a smashing Old Hollywood-influenced affair:

The Venue

1 - While scouting your venue, look for a space reminiscent of an old Jazz club (something you’d see in a classic Greta Garbo flick), with dim lighting and no bright colored lights.

Color, Texture, Lighting

2 - Focus on color, texture and lighting when styling your Old Hollywood wedding, and incorporate small bits of vintage treasures from that time.

Dramatic High Centerpieces

3 - Try placing a high topiary with monochromatic wedding flowers on the center of each table, and use pure white pin spotlights on each to make the color really pop.

Roses Are Red

4 - Stay true to the vintage Hollywood time by using all red roses in differing shades for your reception centerpieces.

Luxe Linens

5 - Add texture-rich table linens (button taffeta is a lovely choice) in sophisticated black, gold, or silver.

Feathers and Frill

6 - Other vintage glam details to consider? Fanciful feathers, dazzling crystals and over-the-top jewels, sultry silhouettes, and peep-toe bridal shoes.

Star-Studded Tables

7 - Instead of standard table numbers, up the old Hollywood flair with black and white head shots of celebrities like Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe. Frame the photos in brushed nickel or stainless steel (in differing shapes and sizes) so they stand out on each table.

Topping It Off

8 - For your white aisle style, try using a single fresh flower to adorn your wedding hairstyle instead of a traditional veil. If you're dead set on donning a bridal veil, go for the birdcage!

Sultry Hair + Makeup

9 - Red lipstick is a must, and a brushed out wavy all-down hairstyle (a la January Jones' hairstyle at the 2011 Golden Globes) is perfection.

Slinky Silhouettes

10 - If you're slender or petite, show off your frame with a slinky sheath wedding dress in silk or satin. This style screams old Hollywood, but only go this route if you're 110% comfortable with your curves.

Will you add a touch of Old Hollywood glam to your wedding day?

If the answer is yes, how will you incorporate the magical vibe without going overboard? Share your thoughts below!
